Respect is an attitude, action, perspective, and a way of life. Here
are five basic principles about respect:
Respect is the “I-Thou” relationship, love in its highest,
purest, most effective form.
Respect is not fear-based, cannot be demanded, but is freely given,
based in positive regard.
Respect is a combination of action, attitude, and an open-minded
perception of the world, seeing the best in others rather than the worst.
Respect is the active ingredient at the center of an individual’s
morality, integrity, and spirituality.
Respect is a basic, pivotal component in the determination between
functional and non-functional social systems.
Respect in the workplace – Common workplace problems:
Bullying.
Intimidating.
Micro-managing
Gossiping, “office politics.”
Competition exceeding respectful boundaries and conduct.
Respectful business practices include:
Positive role-modeling from management.
Collaborative team effort.
Ethical and fair trading practices.
Offer and deliver only quality goods and services.
Offer customer service that is genuinely courteous and respectful.
Respect in other places:
At home. This is where it all begins. We must first be truly respectful
of ourselves. our principles, honor, and integrity. We then need to
honor and respect those close to us, our mates, good friends, and our
children. Parenting with respect is the best way to teach our children
how to be respectful.
In the community. Respect is extended into the community when we
do things like watch out for our neighbors, drive with courtesy, and
become civically involved, especially with those in need. “Giving
back” is a good thing to do.
In our larger world. Our respect for our nation and our globe includes
a genuine caring for the well being of all people, as well as our environment.
Broadmindedness, compassion, and acceptance of our differences are needed.
